Course Information
Description An examination of the multicultural counseling theories and characteristics of diverse populations.
Prerequisites None
Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the counselor's responsibility in developing and maintaining cultural
competence;
2. Compare and contrast various multicultural counseling theories;
3. Identify and categorize unique issues affecting diverse populations;
4. Identify barriers to treatment;
5. Explain personal values, biases, and prejudices.

Core Objectives This focus of Multicultural Counseling includes characteristics of minorities and diverse
populations encountered by counselors and general issues among those groups which may
affect the counseling process. This course will also discuss the need for counselors to identify their own beliefs, ideas, stereotypes and issues related to ethnicity, race, and culture.

Program Student Learning Outcomes 1.    Identify major counseling theories, key figures, their philosophy, and key
concepts.
2.    Define and explain techniques relevant to the various theories.
3.    Identify major approaches to treatment.
4.    Identify the attitudes and skills that are essential to becoming an effective
multicultural counselor.

Attendance Policy INSTRUCTIONAL INFORMATION:
Assignments will be posted on Mondays by 5:00 pm. They will be due on Sundays by 11:59a.m. Students will be expected to participate in threaded Discussion Board topics. Participation is required in the discussion threads by responding to the thread, then posting engaging comments or questions to at least two other peer’s posting to receive complete credit for assignment.

Discussions and Assignments will receive a 10% grade reduction for each day they are overdue. Quizzes, Exams, will not be accepted late.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Students should log into the course each day and check emails and announcements. You will need to notify instructor prior to absence, to receive opportunity for make –up work. Assignments, Quizzes & Exam.

Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
